Summer Enrichment

All student taking science courses during the next academic year are required to complete a science journal.

The Science Journal is to:
Aid students in developing an understanding and appreciation of science in daily life

          Reinforce science concepts

Improve reading comprehension and writing skills

Procedure
          Ten articles are required:
Articles may be located in a number of sources. Examples:
Washington Post Science section (Monday at top of page)
                              Washington Post Health section (Tuesday)
                              Newsweek and/or Time

The articles that students read should have a minimum length.

Those articles in the Science section of the Post that are two to three paragraphs are too short
                    and should not be considered.

Each article is to be clipped out or photocopied and fastened to a page or pages in a loose
leaf three ring notebook or folder.

A summary of each article is required:
The summary is to be typed. It should be grammatically correct with no typos or spelling
                    errors.

The summary must be in the students own words and should not contain sentences copied
                    directly from the article.

The summary should contain at least 300 wods and fit on one side of an 8½ x 11 page.

Each summary must be signed by a parent/guardian.

Summaries should be placed in a loose leaf three ring notebook or in a folder adjacent to
                    the original article.

Assessment
Science journals will be assessed using the following criteria:
                    Directions followed
                    Spelling
                    Parent's signature
                    Grammar
                    Length
                    Content
                    Submitted on time

The Science Journal is due prior to September 17, 2004. After that date, it will be considered late
and assessed as such. The Science Journal counts as an exam for the first quarter.

Students who are accepted after July 3, 2004 must receive approval for an extension from the Science Department Chairperson. Telephone 202-529-0900 ext. 102.
