July 15, 2004

Dear Parents and Students,

We hope this finds you and yours having a great summer. Get lots of rest, Carroll students, for when school reconvenes next month, there will be many exciting goals to accomplish.

First of all, here is a final reminder that Summer Reading and Science assignments are due immediately after your return to school. Both count heavily towards your first quarter grades. If you have any questions, now is the time to contact either myself or Dr. Smith. All students will be accountable for these assignments.

The school calendar is enclosed and will also be available in the Parent Student Handbook, distributed during registration period. New students may have already received the calendar information- a copy of that information is enclosed for new students only.

Our newly appointed Dean of Students, Mr. Larry Savoy (’93), has planned several innovations to ensure that Carroll’s discipline requirements will provide an optimum atmosphere for learning. These include:

  1. Archbishop Carroll High School will be moving to a demerit system with discipline and attendance. The demerit system will be fully explained at orientation days and in the Parent/Student handbook.

  2. The Administration has reviewed the Grooming policy for Archbishop Carroll High School. Young men and young women are to be neat and well groomed at all times.

    1. Males are not allowed to have braids, cornrows, puffs, dreadlocks, ponytails, or twist in their hair. Hair must be neatly groomed and trimmed at all times.

    2. Administration reserves the right to disallow any hair style, male or female, that is inconsistent with Archbishop Carroll High School’s standards of appearance. (some examples: Mohawks, “afros” and extreme hair colors)

    3. Students are expected to come to school dressed for school. Archbishop Carroll students will be required to come and leave school with their shirts tucked into their pants and skirts, anytime they are on school property. Any student who chooses not to comply will be in direct violation of the uniform policy.

  3. Students will be required to have on their person their Student ID cards at all times while on the school grounds. ID cards will be distributed to the students on their designated orientation day.

  4. If a student is planning to drive a vehicle to school, he/she must register the car to receive a parking permit on orientation day. The cost of the permit will be $5 which will be refunded when the permit is returned at the end of the year.

  5. Returning students only: If you have your school lock from 2003-2004 school year, you must present the lock on your designated orientation day. If you fail to do so, you will be given a new lock and the cost will be billed to your school account.

All of these items will be discussed during orientation.

Our Christian Service Coordinator, Mr. Raven Wilkins (’98), has revised those requirements. These are included in this mailing, also.

All of this material will be in the 04-05 Parent Student Handbook.

Finally, a factor in achieving academic excellence which cannot be overlooked is attendance and punctuality. We must commit to a higher standard for our school in this crucial area. Parents will be held accountable for informing Carroll via phone when a student is absent or delayed and with providing a note when the student returns or arrives to school. Academic and discipline sanctions will be assessed if a student has excessive absence or tardiness. Truancy will continue to be a serious offense, with serious consequences. In short we want our students here, everyday and on time. Let’s work together to achieve this goal!

We will miss you until we see you.

Peace,
