Office of the Principal

March 4, 2005

Dear Parents,

I am writing to inform you about a situation that occurred at the school on Thursday, March 3. At 4:40 p.m. in our rear parking lot, two young men drove into our parking lot and approached two Carroll students sitting in a car. The men attempted to take a jacket from the car. When one student resisted, the thief sprayed the student with pepper spray, took the jacket and fled the scene. The D.C. Metropolitan Police were informed and an investigation is underway.

We take this seriously and are aggressively reviewing all security measures at our school. We have increased the presence of our security personnel. In addition, we will be implementing video surveillance for the back parking lot and are considering adding this to other locations outside the building, as well.

After consultation with the police, I urge you to encourage your children to take the following precautions.

  1. Do not linger in the parking lot. Enter school immediately when you arrive for school and leave school grounds immediately once classes and activities have finished.
  2. If you are approached by someone who asks you to surrender your property, do so immediately. Resistance may lead to violence. Material goods are replaceable, lives are not.
  3. If you observe any suspicious behavior, please inform a school administrator at once.

As always, the safety of our Carroll community is our highest priority. We are committed to our students’ education and will do everything possible to ensure that Carroll remains a safe learning community.

Please call or e-mail me with any questions you may have.

Sincerely,
