Guidlines for an Audio/Audio-Visual African American Interview

Objective of the Project:

  • to identify African American culture and how our culture is passed down from generation
    to generation.
  • to identify specific family, religious, and educational values.
  • to compare and contrast family lifestyles, entertainment and ways of life, past and
    present.
  • to find out what messages the elders have for the young today.

How to prepare:

  1. You must choose a person who lived in the South during the 40's, 50's and 60's.
  2. If you are not African American and would like to interview a person in your family or
person of your ethnic background, you may do so, but see me for specific guidelines.
  3. Make arrangements with the person to be interviewed to meet in a very quiet area.
  4. Let the person know in advance why you want to interview them. Tell them that you are
taking a course in African American Studies and as a special project you have to interview
an African American who lived in the South during segregation, integration process and
Black Nationalism. We read about these events, but it is helpful to hear from our people
who lived during these times. Getting an understanding of what life was like then will
help us understand the why's of today and make adequate preparations for the future.
  5. You may use audio or visual equipment. Each presentation must be eight minutes. Before
you meet with the interviewee, make sure all of your equipment is in working order. Please
use new tape. Students have used old tapes which cause them to get a poor grade because
when they started to present, the tape did not function adequately.
  6. Please introduce your self and the person you are interviewing and give recorded verbal
permission to tape your interview of them.

Prepare at least 10 or 12 questions in advance to obtain your information.
